The New Children’s Park in Marina District is Almost Completed!

In the past, the Children’s Park was very under utilized and if you were familiar with it, you likely wouldn’t call it a park for children. Located between Island, Harbor Dr, Front and First st, this park sits in an area that is heavily trafficked. The park is directly across the street from the San Diego Convention Center, the Manchester Grand Hyatt and the Marriott Marquis. First and Front street are main thoroughfares for tourism and business travel, so this is an extremely important park for Downtown San Diego’s overall image.

What are my thoughts on the park?

I am actually very excited about the revitalization of the Children’s Park. The name may be a bit deceiving because it is actually a park that can be enjoyed by a large variety of people. Not only is there a children’s play area, but there is also going to be a building with some sort of vendor/retail component. The location is perfect for some sort of café or coffee shop. There is also a much anticipated off-leash dog run, as well as an exercise area with workout equipment. The Civic Pond, which was built in 1995, is remaining a part of the Children’s Park. They plan on adding an additional walkway through the pond in the shape of a V along the fountains.

Who is paying for this $9m park? It was reported that the park is being funded through fees developers pay for community improvements. I am really excited to see the final project. It is something that has been in the works for years and is finally coming to fruition.
