Always A Good Time In Downtown San Diego At The Padres Home Opener!
I am not a huge baseball fan, but Opening Day is always really fun. The energy and excitement can be felt all around the city as the crowds pour into Petco Park. San Diego isn’t known for their sports, or at least not in a positive light with the recent loss of the Chargers, but one thing it is known for is having a great time while enjoying near perfect weather!
One of my favorite parts of the Home Opener are the parachuting Navy Seals that drop in carrying flags. Typically there are 4 seals that parachute in. The first jumper is carrying a large American flag, with the San Diego Padres flag close behind them. The last two seals have legs locked and parachute down together. This photo was from last year. I was fortunate enough to be a friend’s condo in The Legend with a direct view into the ballpark. It is an awesome site to see!
One of the most popular events during Opening Day is the Block Party on J Street between 6th and 10th. This will be the 7th annual Opening Day Block Party. This year’s event is on Friday April 7th from 10 am – 6:30 pm and Saturday April 8th from 11 am – 7:30 pm. The best part about this event is admission is FREE! The Block Party will have craft beer, food, and cocktail vendors available, as well as games for the family!
If you are just going for fun and festivities, but skipping the actual game, you can always watch at a local pub. I would expect long lines and crowds, but a fun time nonetheless. Two years ago I went to the block party and then watched the pregame festivities from Altitude Sky Lounge, just 1 block from Petco Park. At Altitude you can enjoy the sun on this rooftop patio, as well as amazing views of the stadium, bay and ocean! It was a ton of fun.
Have fun and most importantly stay safe!
