Topgolf’s Waterfront Venue Approval

Exciting news for San Diego residents and visitors! The Port of San Diego has taken a significant step forward in bringing Topgolf to the picturesque East Harbor Island waterfront. This vibrant project is set to breathe new life into an area that has been off-limits to the public for far too long.

The Port Commissioners have given their unanimous approval to a term sheet with Topgolf, paving the way for the development of this flagship driving-range venue. With panoramic views of San Diego Bay and the city skyline, it promises to be a spectacular addition to the waterfront.

The estimated project cost stands at an impressive $61 million, showcasing the commitment to delivering an outstanding recreational space. While the minimum annual rent is projected at $1.5 million, the anticipated figures are even more promising, nearing $2 million. If all goes according to plan, construction is anticipated to commence in late 2025, providing an exciting new activity for San Diegans and visitors alike.

The goal is to introduce public recreation and amenities to an area that has been inaccessible for decades. Topgolf is just one piece of this ambitious puzzle, set to occupy 9.5 acres along the waterfront. Topgolf’s proposed 70,700-square-foot facility, with its 102 hitting bays, 4.5-acre outfield, and breathtaking netting system, promises to draw in half a million guests annually. Add to that multiple restaurants, bars, event spaces, and 293 parking spaces, and you have a recipe for success.

My Opinion of the Project

I am really excited about the potential Topgolf location. It will be great for residents and visitors. The land is owned by the Port Authority and is extremely under utilized. It is acting as a parking lot for rental car companies, which is no longer needed since the completion of the large rental car facility several years back. Topgolf, which is owned by Callaway, is headquartered in Carlsbad so I feel at least 1 location in San Diego is necessary.

If you’ve never been to a Topgolf location, it is definitely worth a visit. I’ve been to the locations in Las Vegas and Scottsdale. It is a lot of fun with a group of people. I am a terrible golfer, but the best part about it is you don’t have to be good. There are different games or targets you can aim for.

My favorite part about this location is the potential view. I’ve always enjoyed the view of San Diego’s skyline over the city, and this location is centered around that concept. If you want something to relate it to, it should be comparable to the view from Costerra and Island Prime. This makes it a great venue for a wide audience.
